New Jersey man travels nearly 80 miles to meet 9-year-old San Antonio cancer patient

Since 1998, Jim Hickey has been on a mission to walk across America to build awareness of childhood cancer. Stella Serna was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2021.

SAN ANTONIO — Some journeys are better on foot, Marine veteran Jim Hickey is afflicted with bladder and kidney cancer himself. Yet, he set out on a journey from Austin to San Antonio to meet 9-year-old Stella Serna.

“We’ve lived our lives, those kids haven’t even started yet,” Hickey said.

Though Serna is shy, her mom Cynthia Vanegas is grateful for Hickey’s support

“The gesture is so kind I mean, and coming from his heart to ours I mean it just is amazing,” Vanegas said. “We’re thankful for every day that we have with her."

Serna was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2021. Since then, her mother says her cancer has spread. Serna is now battling nine tumors five in her brain. And now, lymphoma.

The family is in need of $25,000 to get through the hardest days. Their Facebook page – ‘Stella’s Journey’ is the best way to support.
