SAN ANTONIO — New video shows teenagers leading San Antonio police on a chase through the Northwest side Monday evening.
Investigators said they were involved in a crash with a stolen vehicle and two 16-year-olds were taken into custody off Callaghan Road and Horizon Hill Blvd just before 5 p.m.
One witness said he could have easily been involved in the crash.
“We saw cop cars actually chasing that blue car up that hill and they rammed into it to stop it on purpose,” Carlos Santiago said.
Santiago said he and his girlfriend turned around and filmed the aftermath.
“We saw them with police with the guns drawn on the suspects,” Santiago said.
Police said no one was hurt. They said the teen driver had an active warrant and is now facing evading arrest and unlawful use of a vehicle charges. The female passenger was arrested for unlawful carrying of a weapon.
“Callaghan’s always busy, there are people speeding up and down the street so it’s really dangerous and concerning,” Santiago said.
While Santiago said he is fed up with teenagers stealing vehicles, he questions police’s decision to engage in a chase.
According to SAPD’s pursuit policy, they are not allowed to initiate a chase over non-violent felonies and must take into consideration the time of day and the volume of traffic.
“It’s definitely risky and I would say not worth it especially when there’s innocent people and somebody’s life could definitely be in jeopardy,” He said. “Could’ve easily been us.”
San Antonio Police did not answer our questions regarding if the officer’s followed the policy. Instead, they referred us to the policy posted online. Police did say they would be releasing more information regarding the investigation in the future.
