SAN ANTONIO — Northside Threads is in need of items to help families in the school district.
The clothes closet was created by the NISD Family Engagement Program.
Social Service Coordinator Judith Jones said this is a major resource for families.
"We definitely have had an increase of families with needs," Jones said. "Families in need don't have a particular look," she added. "Anyone can experience a crisis. A fire, a death in the family, a loss of employment. Those things can put a family in a position where finances are difficult."
The NISD Family Engagement Program is located off Blessing Street not far from Culebra.
Jones highlighted five items that were needed. "We do need new underwear for our young ladies," she said. "And our young males up the high school level, we are in always in need of more underwear."
Jones said some of the bins are sparse right now. She added that additional items needed include hygiene products like shampoo, body soap, toothpaste.
"Since the increase and rise of the economy right now, our families are struggling financially," she said. "The needs are greater."
Despite it being close to the end of the school year, school supplies are needed too.
"We are low on pens, pencils, folders, and paper," Jones said.
She said pants are also in high demand.
"Little boys pants [for ages] six, seven, eight, elementary school age. Boys pants seems to go quickly," Jones said.
The clothing is free for families. Each student gets five tops, five bottoms, five pairs of socks, and five pairs of brand new underwear, which means everything goes quickly. However, the impact lasts much longer according to Jones.
"I have gotten many hugs from family members saying 'thank you so much we really appreciate it,'" she said.
