SAN ANTONIO — An off-duty SAPD officer was critically injured after he crashed his bike into an SUV in downtown San Antonio last Wednesday, police say.
San Antonio Police responded to the intersection of McCullough Avenue at North St. Mary's Street around 4:30 p.m. for reports of an accident involving a bicycle rider and a vehicle.
Police say the 26-year-old officer was riding his bike southbound on North St Mary's Street approaching the intersection at McCullough Avenue when he passed through a red light and crashed into a white Dodge Durango.
The off-duty officer hit the SUV on the left rear passenger door area. He was thrown to the ground by the impact and was reportedly unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the SUV stopped and rendered reasonable aid to the officer and cooperated with other officers at the scene. No criminal charges expected to be filed against the driver of the SUV.
At last check, the officer is in good condition and is currently recovering at the hospital for his injuries, said SAPD.
This is a developing story.
