Officers involved in deadly shooting of suspect in 2022 will not face charges

"After private deliberation, the grand jury declined to return a true bill of indictment."

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police officers who shot and killed a man in March of 2022 will not face criminal charges.

"The facts, evidence and applicable law were presented to the grand jury on August 31, 2023. After private deliberation, the grand jury declined to return a true bill of indictment," a representative from the district attorney's office said.

Police chief William McManus originally gave a statement that said the officers were on routine patrol when they recognized Kevin Johnson from two felony arrest warrants; one for assault of an officer and the other for possession of a firearm.

McManus said police attempted to stop Johnson but he ran away. At some point during the chase, police said the man reached for a gun in the waistband of his pants. The officers then opened fire striking Johnson.

Authorities said they recovered a firearm near Johnson after the shooting.

In the aftermath family, neighbors and friends gathered at the scene of the shooting and at one point bystanders began throwing objects, yelling and cursing at police.

Witnesses say the crowd started beating on a police car and begin to rock it, apparently in an attempt to tip it over. In response, SAPD officers used pepper spray to disperse the group.

At least one person was arrested in the chaos.

Body cam footage was released a couple of weeks after the shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Adam Rule, Gus Vallas and James Quintanilla.

It is unclear if the officers still work for SAPD.
