Officials believe squatters may have been inside abandoned home when fire broke out

SAFD suspects that the east-side home was being inhabited illegally when the fire broke out but all of the inhabitants fled the scene before crews arrived.

SAN ANTONIO — Officials believe there were squatters inside an abandoned home on the east side of town when a fire broke out Monday evening.

San Antonio firefighters responded to the 300 block of Canton Street near E Commerce Street and N New Branufels Ave just before 9 p.m. for reports of a structure fire.

When firefighters arrived at the location, they found smoke coming from an abandoned home.

When they got inside, they found a small fire towards the back of the home which they were able to extinguish promptly.

No injuries were reported and they estimate the damages to be around $25,000.

SAFD suspects that the home was being inhabited illegally when the fire broke out, but all inhabitants fled the scene before crews arrived.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
