Officials believe squatters may be to blame for fire at apartment complex

Firefighters say the building is supposed to be boarded up, but the boards were pulled down on the first floor.

SAN ANTONIO — Fire officials believe squatters may be to blame for a fire at a vacant apartment complex on the northwest side of the city early Tuesday morning.

It happened just after midnight in the 100 block of De Chantle Road near Fredericksburg Road.

Firefighters arrived to the once boarded up building to find the boards had been removed from the first floor. Officials believe that squatters may have started the fire.

They were able to knock it down quickly and no injuries were reported.

No word on the amount of damages caused by the blaze.

This is a developing story.
