SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio emergency crews responded to a fatal crash Thursday morning near Balcones Heights, officials say.

The call came in around 6:50 a.m. around the 500 block of Babcock Road near Maverick Elementary School.

Police said two people were struck by a vehicle and sustained life threatening injuries.

Fire officials said one person was pronounced dead upon arrival. Another person was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

It is unclear what lead up the accident, but KENS 5 is collecting the latest details from fire officials and police.

Police said the roadway will be closed for a few hours until the scene is cleared.

The Principal of Maverick Elementary School sent  a letter to families and students about the incident:

This letter is to notify you of a sad incident that occurred near campus this morning that required a large police presence. An accident between vehicles and pedestrians occurred, and a section of Babcock was closed as law enforcement and emergency crews handled the scene. Our thoughts go out to everyone affected, and we have counselors available for students today who may have been distressed by what they saw.

We also want to take this opportunity to reinforce some roadway safety rules. Please remember that Raleigh Place is one-way only during 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. We ask that everyone cross the street at crosswalks only. And just as importantly, if you are driving in the area, please drive slowly and look for pedestrians.

The well-being of our students is a top priority in SAISD schools. We remain committed to ensuring the physical and emotional safety for all students, and we want to keep families informed of situations as soon as we are able. Thank you for your understanding and support.
