SAN ANTONIO — Two people believed to be a husband and wife were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide in a neighborhood near Balcones Heights on Thursday afternoon.
Officers responded to the 200 block of One Oak Drive, near Loop 410 and Babcock, at around 4:15 p.m. The couple was found lying in bed, dead and with gunshot wounds. Police said it was 64-year-old Azucena Limon's birthday.
According to a preliminary police report, 63-year-old Manuel Limon shot his wife with a shotgun while she was lying in bed. Police said he then laid down next to her and fatally shot himself with the same gun. Police discovered a note written in Spanish.
Their bodies were found by their adult son who came to visit for his mother's birthday, the report said.
One neighbor who lives in the area is still trying to understand.
“I was just in shock. I couldn’t believe it," said Mark. “We’ve known them since they moved into the neighborhood, the 80s I think it was. Him and my Dad were real friendly.”
Thursday's incident marks the latest murder-suicide in the San Antonio area.
On Sunday, SAPD responded to a murder-suicide at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Jones Maltsberger Road involving a 28-year-old woman and 30-year-old man.
In August, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of an elderly couple found deceased in their home in the 7100 block of Quarter Moon near Converse.
“The issue of murder-suicide on the part of the perpetrator happens to be nothing else and nothing more horrific than the final act of ultimate control that part person exercises over the victim," said Marta Pelaez, president and CEO of Family Violence Prevention Services.
It's unknown the specifics of what led to each of the murder-suicides, but Pelaez stressed it's important for the community to do their part and report any red flags to authorities.
“We all bear some level of responsibility," Pelaez said.
This is a developing story.
