Outdoor establishment works to beat the summer heat

Elsewhere Garden Bar & Kitchen is capitalizing on late-night business with additional staff and entertainment.

SAN ANTONIO — The scorching temperatures are here to stay, but the heat can be draining on small businesses. That’s why one outdoor bar and kitchen is changing with the season.

At Elsewhere, when the sun goes down, business goes up. General Manager Alli Goeckel says they are capitalizing on the late-night crowd.

“The bulk of my staff will be coming later as guests arrive,” Goeckel said.

More misting fans have been installed this year, officials say, and a project next month will keep customers even cooler.

“We are also building a new greenhouse - which will be right in this area that I am standing in,” said Goeckel. “It will provide more shade.”

With unlimited ice water, lots of shade and late-night entertainment, Goeckel says they do just fine in their slow season.

“It’s still a good season,” she said. “We have really loyal customers, especially from the locals. We are thankful for tourism; we are on the Riverwalk if you are visiting. It is less traffic, but it’s not significantly less where we have to close.”

The outdoor spot knows how to beat the heat, according to customers.

“It feels like it’s 75 right now, it feels good,” said Frank Barron.

“It’s almost like you’re on the beach with the wind,” said Christie Hockenbarger.

“Those restrooms are air conditioned,” said William Neuls. “So, when you go in there, it’s like being in a meat market. That’s the best, honestly.”
