HELOTES, Texas -- A Helotes woman is making it her mission to collect prom dresses for girls who need them. She already has 30 and is looking for more.
"Prom is a right of passage. These girls shouldn't be denied to go because they can't afford to get a dress," Donna Voelker said. She remembers what it was like to miss out on a prom dress. "I came from a home where we just didn't make money," she said.
Working as a volunteer at the non-profit Jefferson Outreach, Voelker discovered dozens of prom dresses at a resale shop. She asked if she could give them away.
"We were just thrilled because we had never thought of that by ourselves. It's all about paying it forward," said Joy Martinez, the owner of the shop. "We're blessed and we want to help other people."
Voelker wants people to be inspired and help make Project Prom an annual success.
She has reached out to several school districts, and on Friday, she'll be going to Thomas Jefferson High School with the dresses.
