Pest control specialist shares ways to keep bugs out of your home as the temps rise

The good news is there are some inexpensive ways to catch those pesky critters.

BEAUMONT, Texas — As temperatures continue to rise, we're not the only ones looking to seek refuge from the heat, so are bugs.

Rising temps means more critters will also be seeking shelter inside of your home. 12News spoke to a pest control specialist about what you can do about the bug boom.

The good news is there are some inexpensive ways to catch those pesky critters.

As the heat cranks up, bugs need a cool place to hunker down.

"Spiders, you have earwigs, you have the tree roaches which are American roaches, but we call them tree roaches," said pest control specialist, Michael Booker.

Booker has been in the business for 14 years. He says there are preventative measure to take to keep the pests out of your home.

"Make sure your yard is cut. Make sure everything is cleared out where you're stopping hiding areas from the pests. So, removing tires, removing standing logs and stuff around your homes will eliminate a lot of infestations," Booker said.

If critters like silverfish have already found there way in, there's an inexpensive way to get rid of them.

"Get glue traps. A couple of glue traps are $2 or $3 each. Set them in your garage and you'll catch all the silverfish you need to catch," said Booker.

Right now, people are more concerned with earwigs. Booker says they are harmless, but you may already have some items lying around your kitchen to keep them from coming back.

"They could get a little tin can. A little small tin can like a tuna can or something and put a little vegetable oil, Crisco oil and put it in and the earwigs will get attracted to the oil and go straight in the can," he said.

Orange homeowner Valeria Thomas hopes to keep bugs in their natural habitat.

"We don't want any bugs in the house. Now they can stay outside where they belong, but not in the house!" she said.

Although bugs don't need much space, gaps in window seals make it easier for them to intrude. To help keep the bugs out Booker recommends sealing any cracks.
