Piles of dogs dumped on the side of the road between Elmendorf and Sandy Oaks area disturb drivers

Six dogs were dumped on Priest Road, some with a visible gunshot wound.

SAN ANTONIO — Residents say two piles of dead dogs were dumped along Priest Road between the Sandy Oaks and Elmendorf areas. Some of the animals had a visible gunshot wound.

What initially caught the attention of drivers commuting through south San Antonio were vultures circling the area.

“Heartbroken to see them like that,” a passer-by said. “We’d see these dogs every day for the past week running around, playing.”

The passer-by, who wished to remain anonymous, says seeing the two piles the dogs about 200 yards from each other made her sick to her stomach.

“And what bothered me the most was just seeing that bullet hole.”

The woman who took the photo and posted it on Nextdoor brought the photo to the Sandy Oaks Police Department.

“They couldn’t do nothing on their end because it would be leaving Sandy Oaks. So, it would be Bexar County.”

KENS 5 contacted the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, who told us that, because of the bullet wound, Bexar County Animal Control doesn’t have authority to investigate cases that may involve animal cruelty. As a result, this situation was escalated to BCSO.

On Tuesday afternoon, a Bexar County Public Works truck picked up the carcasses.

BCSO officials advise anyone who has information about the dogs that were dumped in the area to call the non-emergency line of (210) 335-6000. A deputy or officer will respond depending on the jurisdiction.
