Police end chase that lasted over an hour, arresting repeat arsonist

First responders say the man set four cars and a fence on fire, then hopped roofs until he was arrested.

SAN ANTONIO — A string of fires on the northeast side of town had police chasing the suspect for over an hour, ending with him on a rooftop.

First responders showed up to the first call for a car fire at a housing complex just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Austin Highway near Ira Lee Road.

When crews arrived, they discovered there was also a fence burning behind the building.

Firefighters put out the flames, then a person pulled up telling them about another brush fire.

An hour and a half after those fires, police say three vehicles were burning at a repo yard down the road, and soon found a suspect running through the neighborhood.

Police say the man climbed on top of a house and jumped across several roofs before falling off and running to a post office on Austin Highway.

The man climbed on top of that roof and got stuck, finally surrendering around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

SAPD says the man is being charged with arson but says more charges are possible.

This is a developing story.
