SAPD has five teens in custody following attempted burglary and foot chase in the downtown area

The five also tried to get away in a stolen vehicle in which officers found two weapons, police said.

SAN ANTONIO — Police say they have four juveniles and one adult in custody following an attempted burglary and a foot chase in the downtown area early Tuesday morning.

San Antonio Police responded to the Agave Apartments located in the 600 block of South St. Mary's Street around 3:24 a.m. for reports about an unauthorized vehicle entering the property through the gate.

When officers arrived at the location, they parked their patrol cruisers at the gate where the suspects unauthorized vehicle had entered.

While police officers were searching the area for the vehicle, they saw five young men who immediately raced back to their vehicle and sped off, striking the two police cruisers that the investigating officers had parked at the entrance gate. They also hit the security patrol vehicle.

After crashing their vehicle, all of the suspects bailed and led officers on a 10 minute foot pursuit in the area.

Police were able to capture the four young men who are under the age of 17, as well as one 17-year-old.

Officers discovered the vehicle that the suspects had attempted to drive away in was in fact, stolen.

They also found two weapons inside the vehicle.

Chris Lupus, who has lived at the Agave Apartments since February, says he's not surprised by such alleged criminal activity. He said his girlfriend's car was broken into at the complex in March.

“My girlfriend’s car, she has a KIA. You know, they’re hot to break into these days," Lupus said. “I mean, it’s been rough honestly. Lots of cars getting broken into all the time.”

Lupus shared a message apartment management sent to tenants on Dec. 11 regarding alleged vehicle burglaries at the complex and surrounding area. The letter included several tips on how tenants can protect themselves and their property.

Lupus plans to move to Florida next week for work.

"I love San Antonio, I'm going to miss it. I love living down here aside from the issues I have with the Agave staff," Lupus said.

Pending charges for the five teens include evading on foot, attempted burglary of a vehicle, unauthorized use of a vehicle and theft of a firearm, according to police.
