Police searching for driver who hit teen girl, did not stop

The girl suffered a broken leg that officials said was serious, but not life-threatening.

SAN ANTONIO — Police are looking for a driver who hit a teenager on the east side late Monday night, and never stopped.

San Antonio Police officers responded to the 4600 block of Rigsby Avenue around 9:45 p.m. for reports of a hit and run incident.

When officers arrived at the location, they found a 16-year-old teen lying in the street with a broken leg. She was taken to BAMC with a broken femur, in critical condition.

Police say she was walking in the road when she was hit by a SUV. That driver did not stop and drove away immediately in an unknown direction after they hit her. Officials found parts of the vehicle in the roadway.

Vanessa Starbuck was leaving a store off Rigsby Avenue when she heard a loud noise. She turned around and saw the teenager in the middle of the road.

“I get in my car, I go over there, the oncoming traffic is not stopping they are just zooming right past her, trying to go around her," Starbuck said.

Starbuck said she parked her car in the middle of the road to stop traffic and called 911. She said the girl was confused and dazed.

“She said how did I get out here? I was in my bed asleep dreaming about my mom and my grandma,” Starbuck said. "She said she had just woken up."

Starbuck stayed there, holding the girl's hand until first responders got to the scene.

"She just kept asking, is she ok? am I going to die?" Starbuck said.

Starbuck said she was wearing dark clothing. She believes the driver did not intend to hit her but is frustrated they did not stop.

“I have a 14-year-old and I would be devastated if she was just left in the street and hit like that," Starbuck said.

SAPD said once the driver is found, they will be facing one charge of Failure to Stop and Render Aid – Serious Bodily Injury.

The scene remains under investigation.
