Police searching for suspect who fatally shot a man in stomach west of downtown

The man was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital. SAPD says there were no witnesses.

SAN ANTONIO — Police are searching for a suspect connected to a fatal shooting west of downtown that happened late Sunday evening.

San Antonio police were dispatched to the 1200 block of South San Marcos near Tampico Street just before 11 p.m. for reports of a shooting.

"I was getting some fresh air. After a while, I heard a big boom. I just came back and found out there was a shooting," said Richard, who lives in the neighborhood.

Richard asked KENS 5 not to use his last name or show his face for safety reasons.

Officers say the victim, identified as 33-year-old Miguel Marquez, was shot in the stomach. He was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Due to his condition when he arrived at the hospital, Marquez was not able to share details with investigators. Police say there were no witnesses when the shooting happened.

At this time, they are working to identify a suspect in this case.

Meanwhile, Richard is hoping the City of San Antonio considers installing more lighting in the neighborhood to increase community safety and potentially help police during their investigations.

“There are more posts than there are lights," Richard said. “More lighting and then maybe some surveillance on top of the posts.”

If you know or saw anything, give police a call.
