Man shot by Dallas police was holding a replica gun, police chief says

Sources tell WFAA that the 26-year-old man pulled a gun out when given commands from police.

DALLAS — (EDITOR'S NOTE: This article has been updated to reflect new information provided Dallas Police, including correcting the alleged suspect's name.)

Officers with the Dallas Police Department shot and killed a man Saturday night after he allegedly pulled a gun on them, according to the department. The gun was later determined to be a replica, police said.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said officers responded to a call of an armed man attempting to break into apartments at 3131 Norwalk Avenue.

In a press conference Tuesday, Garcia released recordings of 911 calls that preceded the incident and body camera footage of the shooting. Witnesses told 911 operators that the suspect, later identified by police as Domingo Pop Pan, 26, attempting to break into a second flood apartment was a Hispanic man, armed with a handgun and appeared to be intoxicated.

According to Garcia, Officers Muhammad Rizvi and Cory Adams confronted the Pop Pan and gave him commands to show his hands in Spanish and English. However, Pop Pan pulled a handgun out from his waistband and the officers fired at him, killing him. Police later found the gun to be a replica, Garcia said in a press conference Tuesday.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Dallas Police released images of the replica gun that allegedly belonged to Pop Pan.

"When you see it, I think you will all agree as well that the officers thought this was a real firearm," Garcia said.

Police sources say Pop Pan had no previous criminal history.

The incident is being investigated by the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County District Attorney.
