Pollos Asados 'El Gordo' owner indicted for cocaine trafficking, federal authorities say

Jonathan Linares Lumbreras is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

SAN ANTONIO — The owner of a local restaurant is facing drug trafficking charges, according to a federal indictment.

In the indictment obtained Monday by KENS 5, Jonathan Linares Lumbreras is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine as well as conspiracy to possess with intent to sell cocaine. The indictment is dated August 7 and includes two others facing charges, Roxanne Herrera and Edward Smith.

Documents with the City of San Antonio list Lumbreras as the owner of Pollos Asados "El Gordo" on Pinn Road. He is also listed on Bexar County Appraisal District records as the owner of the restaurant.

According an arrest affidavit, Lumbreras used an encrypted app called "Threema" and contacted an undercover FBI source on July 9. The source stated “Need one asap…before my guy goes somewhere else.” Lumbreras replied, “I got you like by 12 doe that’s when they here,” the affidavit said. They continued to message to arrange the delivery of two kilograms of cocaine and they agreed to do the delivery at the McDonald’s at Walters and IH-35 in San Antonio. That location was apparently used in two previous narcotics deliveries between the source and Lumbreras.

The arrest affidavit says Lumbreras coordinated with Smith and one other, unnamed person to deliver the drugs, but Smith was stopped and arrested before the drop and the drugs were seized.

Lumbreras was previously charged with drug possession in a criminal case involving the arrest of 12 other people across South Texas in 2021, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. The arrest affidavit says he was actually on supervised release from that conviction when he is alleged to have committed the crimes in July of 2024.

If convicted, Lumbreras faces between five and 40 years in federal prison.

This is a developing story and further details will be added as they are received.
