SAN ANTONIO — Several hundred people across San Antonio got their hands on a portable gun security case for free as District 3 held its first community safety fair at Southside Lions Senior Center on Saturday.

The event is part of a city initiative to promote gun safety within the community.

Each case runs about $50. The city partnered with SAPD to give away these safety gun boxes for free.

Tamara Kibbe, who was at Saturday's event, owns guns but fears they could end up in the wrong hands. "I don't want that any of my guns to be put into the hands of a felon or somebody else that could possibly be used to harm another person," Kibbe said.

As a gunowner herself, Kibbe knows how expensive it can be to store a gun safely. "I strongly believe in gun safety. I want to make sure that all our guns are safe that we own, and I  can't necessarily always afford to get a gun safe," she said.

District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran explained gun violence and shootings are a known issue in the area, adding she herself has lost friends and family to gun violence. "I think, for us in District 3 to understand that gunfire, gunshots, gun violence, is an issue in this area. And we wanted to make sure we were addressing it," Viagran said.

Residents across San Antonio can get a safety box, which has a three digit pass lock for free by calling 210-207-0969
