SAN ANTONIO — Smoke Skybar took to social media on Friday, announcing changes being made at the venue to prioritize customer safety following the tragic shooting death of a Jasper ISD cheer coach at the location in July.

The downtown San Antonio bar owner, Adrian Martinez, said the venue will be downsizing its operations to no longer host concerts and implement a new security team as part of efforts to create a safer environment with improved crowd control.

Additionally, the owner said the venue has made the decision to enclose the upper-level outdoor patio bar where 28-year-old Ayden Burt was shot and killed by a stray bullet.

Burt, who was in San Antonio for a conference earlier this summer, was reportedly sitting on the patio bar when a gunshot was heard from the vicinity of I-37 and she was struck by a bullet that San Antonio officials believe came from the nearby highway.

Burt was taken to BAMC in critical condition, but later died from her injuries.

Following the tragic incident, Smoke Skybar says it has been working closely with city officials, specialists and law enforcement to make the venue safer.

“We’ve listened closely to your feedback San Antonio,” the facebook announcement reads. “We want to assure you that we are more committed than ever to doing everything possible to ensure Smoke Skybar represents our great city with the highest standards!”
