'It's like he disappeared off the face of the earth' | SA family searching for man missing since June

Dharma Scott Smittick has not been in contact with anyone in his family, and was last known to be in the downtown area.

SAN ANTONIO — The family of a San Antonio man has been searching for him since June 26.

Dharma Scott Smittick has not been in contact with anyone in his family, and was last known to be in the downtown area.

His family is worried and hopes he is found safe.

Smittick, 29, is described  as easygoing. He moved to San Antonio in 2019, and his family says he struggles with depression, a mental health issue requiring a doctor's care, and homelessness.

“He's had a lot of trauma, basically due to some family life, and being vulnerable in the street life,” said Jorine Mills, Smittick's aunt.

Smittick last had contact with his mother Mary on June 26, through a text message after speaking with a case manager at a local shelter. Mary says he texted her saying he was going to a men's ministry.  She says for the few days before he disappeared, they were talking about bringing him to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she now lives.

“His mother hasn't heard from him, these community people in these communities have not seen him, so there is something wrong,” said Mills.

Mills says Smittick would sometimes rely on help from community advocates and his mother, so red flags were raised when he stopped speaking with them.

“We don't know where he is," she said. "It's like he just disappeared off the face of the earth. That's the scary part."

Dharma is 5-foot-10, and has curly hair and tattoos on his right arm of a black crown and black circle. He also has a tattoo on his right shoulder of a Buddhist symbol known as the Wheel of Dharma.

His family says not knowing where he is has proven very emotional. They are praying he is OK, and hoping someone can give them answers.

“Let him know that we care. Let him know to contact somebody, especially your mom,” said Mills.
