SAN ANTONIO — As law enforcement and Fiesta organizers mull their options for improving security at popular annual events like Fiesta de los Reyes, where deadly gunfire broke out over the weekend, police continue to investigate a 2023 shooting that also took place at Market Square while packed with revelers.
Almost exactly a year before authorities say two young men were killed after opening fire on each other Sunday morning, police said a 25-year-old was shot during a crowded music performance at Market Square.
It happened on April 26, 2023, but police confirmed Tuesday that no arrests have been made.
Omar Rodriguez was hospitalized for a few weeks after he went to Fiesta de los Reyes with his wife and other family members only for him to end up in the hospital. He told KENS 5 last year that another family member got into a disagreement with someone when he started pulling her away.
That's when he was shot.
"When I hit that floor, I was like, 'I am going to die,'" said Rodriguez, who added the bullet was just inches from his heart. "It was fast. It went this way and it came out in the back."
He needed to undergo three surgeries.
The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) last year released photos of a woman they said was a person of interest in the shooting, but no suspects have been identified in the 12 months since.
Asked about any potential updates in the case, an SAPD spokesperson told KENS 5 on Monday that they "encourage anyone who may have information from the night of the (2023) shooting to contact our homicide unit at (210) 207-7635."
SAPD Chief William McManus promised Monday that visitors to the free Fiesta de los Reyes event "will be checked for weapons" in 2025.
