SAFD: Person found dead in 'very small' house fire

Information is limited at this time as arson investigators are still looking into the case.

SAN ANTONIO — Arson investigators are looking into a what the San Antonio Fire Department is calling a "very small fire" that left a person dead.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, SAFD responded to reports of a structure fire on the 800 block of South Smith Street. Upon arrival, SAFD confirmed that they found one person dead on scene. 

According to SAFD, the it was a "very small fire" as only a mattress was on fire.

Devastated family members identified the deceased man as 81-year-old Manuel Castillo. The medical examiner later confirmed his identity. 

The arson team is investigating the case.
