Suspect at center of north-side standoff escapes, SAPD says

SWAT was able to rescue three young children, including an 8-month-old baby, who police say was inside with the suspect.

SAN ANTONIO — Police say they're looking for a man wanted for child sexual assault and other charges after he managed to evade authorities during a standoff on the north side Thursday afternoon

Officers initially responded to Spanish Oaks Apartments in the area of Loop 410 and Wurzbach around 1 p.m. after a woman reported "a disturbance of some kind," according to Sgt. Washington Moscoso with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). SWAT was called in when police learned there were three children -- the youngest an 8-month-old baby -- inside the apartment with the suspect, 25-year-old Faustino Diaz.

"SWAT were able to extract the three children from the apartment," Moscoso said. "They're safe now."

But when police tried to find Diaz himself, Moscoso said, they found he managed to escape.

SAPD is now looking for the suspect, who Moscoso says has other outstanding misdemeanor warrants in addition to being wanted for sexually assaulting a child. Online court records indicate he was previously arrested for marijuana possession and assaulting a family member, but both those cases were closed.

It's possible Diaz could face additional charges related to Thursday's events.
