Local cyclist warns parkgoers to be more alert on bike trail after a bullet flies past his head

Albert Guzman says the incident happened along the Salado Creek Greenway Trails. He hopes his experience will help others be more aware of their surroundings.

SAN ANTONIO — Albert Guzman visits the Salado Creek Greenway Trails three to four times a week. Due to a close call while on a bike ride on July 26, he says there is a section of the trail he's apprehensive of biking on.

“I was riding along the Greenway,” Guzman said. “I heard two of what sounded like shots.”

At first, Guzman thought what he heard was a car backfiring.

“The third loud sound was definitely a shot because I heard it breaking the tree limbs behind me,” Guzman said.

The close call happened near Wurzbach Parkway on the city's north side.

“Definitely when I heard it zinging by,” Guzman said. “So I felt like they were going westbound in a vehicle because I heard the shots get progressively louder.”

Albert hit the ground and dialed 911 for help.

“There was no bikers around me," he said. "And when I was on the ground, not even anybody came by so it was kind of quiet that day.”

When he didn’t hear anymore shots, he says he left the area immediately. He says the trail usually has a lot of people on it.

“I just haven’t come through this section for the last week or so,” Guzman said. “It’s a different San Antonio than it used to be for sure.”
