SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio crews responded to a fire at a two-story building in Tobin Hill, just north of downtown, officials said. A nearby restaurant was evacuated as a precaution.

The building in the 1800 block of McCullough, near East Locust Street, was abandoned, according to SAFD Chief Valerie Frausto. She said responding firefighters quickly searched the property after arriving around 7:10 p.m. Thursday to make sure no one was inside, then started to put out the flames.

"The bulk of the fire was knocked down within 20 minutes or so," Frausto said around 8:15 p.m., saying crews were still working to extinguish spots of "stubborn fire."

Crews were aided by the fact the building is on a street corner, Frausto said, adding it's possible it could end up demolished. SAFD still has to determine how the fire might have started.
