SAPD: Teen fires at officers responding to disturbance, strikes patrol car

A relative said the teen was 15 years old. He eventually surrendered to police, and is expected to face charges.

SAN ANTONIO — For the fourth time in a span of seven days, San Antonio authorities said police officers faced an armed suspect Monday night.

According to SAPD officials, an unidentified teenager shot at officers arriving to the area of Rigsby and Tyne just before 8 p.m. after receiving a call for a disturbance.

When police arrived, officials said, they saw a man and his son, southbound on Tyne next to the parking lot of the Pollos Asados restaurant. Police said the man appeared to be trying to calm down his young son, who was angry and armed with a pistol.

Authorities said the teen fired multiple shots at officers, hitting at least one patrol car and flattening a tire. No officers were hit.

One sergeant estimated that the teen was only 20 or 25 feet away from the patrol vehicle when he started shooting at the lead officer.

The father, who said the teen was 15 years old, begged police not to return fire. SAPD said the officers stood their ground before the teen eventually surrendered. He's expected to face charges in juvenile court.

Police said they recovered at least two shell casings, but they declined to say the caliber of the pistol used in the attack.

This was also the second shooting involving SAPD uniformed personnel in less than 24 hours. Early on Monday morning, authorities say police shot and killed an armed man after unsuccessfully using a Taser on him.
