SAN ANTONIO — Sunday morning a fatal rollover crash on the west-side took the life of one person, the driver, after the car rolled over onto an embankment. Another car slammed into that rolled over vehicle killing that driver too.
KENS 5 spoke with the experts to find out what you should do after a crash to get yourself after harm's way.
"The best tip I can give you is to stay calm," said Tracy Benevides, who teaches Teens in the Driver's Seat at Taft High School. "It's actually started here at Taft after we lost a couple of students in a driving accident due to weather. My parents started the organization and it's actually gone nationwide," Benevides said.
Allstate says if you are involved in an accident: Check yourself for any injuries. If you're injured, call 911 or ask someone else to do so. If you're seriously injured, try not to move. Check on the well-being of your passengers if you're not too hurt to move. Get to safety on the side of the road and get your vehicle to safety if it is possible. Call 911 whether an accident is considered a minor fender-bender or a major collision. And finally, wait for help.
Students in the driving program say they know how to be safe if involved in a crash.
"Check for oncoming traffic. Make sure that it's OK for me to be able to get out of the vehicle safely as well as not causing harm to anyone else by me exiting and carry," said Arantza Gomez.
"Going to the side where like the highway is where like no cars are coming and also checking on other people to make sure everybody else is OK," said Kara Holloway.
After hearing about the tragic accidents from this past weekend, students know learning about what to do after an accident is of the utmost importance.
"It's definitely a top priority because I feel like we're already in a lot of danger, like if we are in a car accident." Victoria Falcon added, "Even if they're still really young. It should matter to everyone to keep them safe," said Sarah Osori.
Next Friday, San Antonio hosts the "Teens in the Driver's Seat and the Youth Transportation Safety Summit" being held at the Marriott Riverwalk.
