SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police gathered and plan to destroy a fake grenade reported by a concerned customer visiting The Rim on Tuesday evening, authorities say.

A Bass Pro Shops customer reported what looked like a grenade "and a couple of shell casings" laying in the parking lot outside the store around 6 p.m., according to Sgt. Washington Moscoso with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). That visitor reported the sight to store employees, who called police.

"It was an inert novelty item, not a real grenade," Moscoso said. "Don't know if someone was trying to play a joke, (but) it's not a funny joke. We take everything seriously."

Moscoso said SAPD plans to destroy the item, adding the customer did the right thing by reporting a suspicious sight.

"They saw something, they said something," he said. "It did appear very suspicious."

There was never any tangible threat at the popular northwest-side shopping center, police said. While no one has been arrested in connection with the item, Moscoso ended with a message to the community: "Be smart. Make better choices."
