TxDOT says no delays will occur after bridge column fire OSHA is investigating

Fire officials say it was construction materials that burned, but no cause has been determined.

SAN ANTONIO — You may have seen a video sent in by KENS 5 viewers of a bridge column lit up like an Olympic torch.

The fire happened Thursday afternoon at 1604 and I-10, which has been a staple of San Antonio roadway construction.

Firefighters say they were able to contain the fire quickly, with no injures reported and no impact to traffic.

According to SAFD, the fire started at 1:31 p.m. on top of a bridge column off I-10 West and North Loop 1604 West access road near La Cantera Parkway.

SAFD says it was construction materials that burned and also said it wasn't a challenge to extinguish, it just required getting water to the top of the column.

We did ask TxDOT about delays, they say the fire is under investigation and they are assessing potential damage to the bridge column.

The fire did cause quite a bit of traffic on social media, with nearly 100,000 views, and people commenting that the fire looked like an Olympic torch, with one viewer asking if the Winter Olympics had begun.

Another viewer commented the fire was San Antonio's Own Statue of Liberty.  Overwhelmingly most comments were viewers asking about possible delays in construction.

TxDOT said the construction scheduled has not been impacted and this weekends closures will continue as planned.

We did also reach out to OSHA about the fire, they say they are aware and they are looking into it.
