TxDOT partners with DPS to help end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways

Nov. 7 is the anniversary marking the 24th year there has not been one deathless day on Texas roadways according to TxDOT.

SAN ANTONIO — A death every day on a Texas roadway, that’s what TxDOT says has been happening for the last 24 years.

To date, around 87,000 people have been killed on Texas roads and TxDOT says so far this year Texas is averaging 10 road deaths a day.

So they’re partnering with DPS and asking the community to help bring change and push this message: “End The Streak of Daily Deaths."

Monique Presas has dealt with this problem first hand when her daughter Whitney was taken from her when a drunk driver hit her on Feb. 8th of this year.

“I text her and I say answer me…please Whitney answer me and she didn’t answer," Presas said.

Their lives were completely altered and Whitney's nursing career ripped away.

On Nov. 5, two men BCSO told us were loading a truck onto a trailer on I-10 West Northbound were hit and killed by a woman authorities say was under the influence of alcohol.

She is charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

It’s tragedies like these the agencies are hoping to end with their campaign “end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways.”

“Drinking and driving and distracted driving are among the leading causes of crashes and fatalities," Sergeant Orlando De Luna JR., Texas highway patrol with DPS said.

BCSO felt the impact of this issue firsthand after losing one of their own to a wrong-way driver in August.

For the next two weeks, DPS will hand out brochures at traffic stops to help inform the community how they can help on the roadways.
