SAN ANTONIO — A Morales Junior High student in Uvalde will face "disciplinary action" after officials say he brought a handgun to campus and showed it to some students.
In a letter sent to Uvalde CISD parents and shared on social media, officials said the weapon "was not used to threaten students." The student in question was taken off the school property after a campus officer was notified of the gun and confiscated it.
"As with all matters of student safety, we have taken this very seriously," Superintendent Ashley Chohlis said in the letter. "This act is a violation of law and the Student Code of Conduct."
The district didn't specify the discipline the unidentified student would face. It's also unclear how long the gun was on campus before the officer confiscated it.
The small South Texas community of Uvalde continues to reckon with the aftermath of the Robb Elementary School shooting, when 19 students and two teachers were killed in May 2022. Last month, an extensive report from the Department of Justice detailed the series of failures from law enforcement during and after the tragedy, reigniting calls for accountability from parents of victims.
Uvalde CISD's Thursday letter also urges parents to discuss the latest incident with children, and to "emphasize that it is against the law to bring weapons of any type to school." It also asks parents to remind their children about notifying staff if they become aware of a weapon on campus.
"Only by working as a school community in partnership with parents can we create and maintain the level of safety that we want for our children that they deserve," Chohlis said.
