Two dead and 10 hospitalized after major Uvalde wreck, police say

It was preceded by a chase between Border Patrol and a "suspect vehicle," authorities say.

SAN ANTONIO — Uvalde police say two people are dead and 10 recovering at local hospitals after a major crash involving an 18-wheeler in the heart of town.

The crash happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday at Main and Getty, and shut down the intersection for several hours as authorities investigated.

According to officials with the Texas Highway Patrol, the crash was preceded by a Toyota Tacoma truck that was smuggling migrants attempting to evade Border Patrol agents. In the chaos it ran through a red light at the Uvalde intersection, hitting a semitruck and starting a chain reaction that resulted in a third vehicle also being hit.

The driver of the Tacoma, 17-year-old Anahi Ramos, and an unidentified front-seat passenger died in the collision, according to the Texas Highway Patrol. Ramos was an Austin resident.

Eight of the nine migrants in the Tacoma were hurt and taken to hospitals in San Antonio; one of them was in critical condition as of Wednesday evening. The drivers of the other vehicles involved were taken to Uvalde hospitals as well.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is continuing to investigate the incident.
