Business owner hopeful for more rain after Medina Lake sees slight rise in water levels

Mike Crandall, owner of Wallys Watersports, welcomes the six-foot rise in water levels at Medina Lake. But he'd be impressed by even more.

MICO, Texas — Recent wet weather has given a little boost to water levels in South Texas, including at Medina Lake.

But the slight increase still isn’t enough to allow extensive public access to boat ramps.

Despite the recent rains, there hasn’t been a dramatic difference to the naked eye, yet the community is keeping hopeful Mother Nature will return with more favorable weather.

“The rains were great. Medina Lake got a six-foot rise,” said Mike Crandall, owner of Wallys Watersports, which has been in business for 35 years. “I get calls every day: 'Is there any water? Are you open?' Yeah, we’re open. It’s not a lot of water, but there’s enough to ski and kayak on.”

As of Tuesday, Medina Lake was 3.6% full with a water level of 976 feet, compared to 979 feet a year ago.

One month ago, the average water level at Medina Lake was 970 feet.

While business is slow in general, Crandall isn’t shutting down his daily rain dance anytime soon.

“My hope for the future is that it’d be nice if we could get at least (a) 10-to-20-foot rise out of it before next summer hits,” Crandall said. “There could be people out here if there was a boat ramp open. We need more water to get them going, to get them open.”

Meanwhile, Canyon Lake is keeping steady at around 885 feet, which is up from a week ago. The lake is 57% full compared to 71% on July 30, 2023.
