SAN ANTONIO — A man helped extinguish a fire at a local apartment complex on the south side Wednesday morning, officials said.
The San Antonio Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the 500 block of W Hutchins Pl around 9:40 a.m.
The Battalion Chief on scene Andy Deason said a resident of the Aristocrat Apartments saw smoke coming from the second floor in the leasing office and called SAFD.
According to officials before firefighters arrived the resident kicked in the leasing office door and used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames on a nearby desk.
When firefighters arrived they extinguished the rest of the fire and tried to remove the desk which they initially believed was the origin of the fire.
As they were moving the desk one firefighter nearly fell through a hole in the floor which had been burnt through, Deason said.
Officials said the firefighter was able to catch himself and his crew was able to pull him up. He was not injured during the incident.
Deason said the fire started in the floor between the first and second floor.
The first floor is a laundry room and the second floor is where the leasing office is located.
The fire spread from the floor to the desk in the leasing office, Deason said.
According to officials no residents were in the leasing office at the time of the fire.
Officials said no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
SAFD officials said residents should not respond to fires alone and say you should call SAFD immediately and let them handle the situation.
