HOUSTON — In an area where Ricardo "Ricky" Resendez grew up, his loved ones gathered Saturday to honor his life.
Ricky, 28, was killed in a crash involving a former constable deputy last weekend.
His family gathered to hold a vigil in his honor while also calling for justice.
They said they have been in a lot of pain in the wake of Ricky's death, but put it to the side and got together at the Navigation Esplanade.
They said prayers for him, shared memories and lit candles in his honor.
They then walked a few blocks away to the scene of the crash.
They're hoping their pain is felt by the district attorney, who they want charges to be filed against the former Harris County Precinct 6 constable deputy they said is responsible for Ricky's death.
The former law enforcement officer involved in the crash has yet to be charged with a crime but has been identified as Rigo Viviar, who was apparently off-duty and, according to the Houston Police Department, driving the wrong way on Canal Street at the time of the crash. He was fired after the incident.
Ricky's sister, Brenda Resendez, said the family won't stop fighting for justice while their mother said she's not been able to sleep and is having trouble functioning without her son.
