Rideshare driver shot, killed while picking up passenger, police say

Police found shell casings both inside and outside of the rideshare vehicle, which means the passenger inside fired back at the shooter's vehicle.

SAN ANTONIO — A rideshare driver who was shot in the back early Monday morning, while they were picking up a passenger has died, according to police.

It happened before 12:30 a.m. on Anchor Drive, near Lockhill Selma Road and West Avenue, in the Castle Hills area.

Police say the driver, 61, was shot in the back after picking up someone. A witness said they heard the shooting, and saw a vehicle driving backwards in the street.

Police found shell casings both inside and outside of the rideshare vehicle, which means the passenger inside fired back at the shooter's vehicle.

A resident who wishes to remain anonymous told KENS 5 their car that was parked on Anchor Drive near the shooting was hit with six bullets.

“I’m feeling kind of scared…you never know when it’s going to happen again," the resident said.

He added that this has never happened in his neighborhood the five years he's lived there.

"I'm lucky no one was in the car."

The rideshare driver was the only person at the scene when police arrived. He was taken to University Hospital in serious condition. He later died from his injuries. He has been identified as Robert Renteria, 62.

Police are still searching for the shooter and the rideshare passenger.

Uber and Lyft have yet to confirm who the driver worked for. KENS 5 is working to confirm that information.

A local ride share driver shared his concerns with KENS 5 following this event.

“I think they need to be paying hazard pays at certain times of night," Brian Calloway said.

Calloway said incidents like this make him more hesitant to be a ride share driver but he needs it to make money.

He added that he stays away from certain areas in San Antonio.

“Driving in San Antonio, there’s some areas you know you don’t feel safe," Calloway said.

This is a developing story.
