SAN ANTONIO — The Ronald McDonald House Charities will reopen its Sid Katz house to help families save money and have a place of refuge.
The Sid Katz house opened nearly 30 years ago, giving families a free place to stay near their children in medical situations.
The non-profit says it has had to turn families away due to not having enough space at their two other locations.
With the Sid Katz house reopening, the non-profit will be able to help over 200 families a year.
For background, the Sid Katz house has been closed for three years after the 2021 winter storm.
Staff say the home was flooded with about six inches of rain in the building.
After it closed down, the Ronald McDonald House gathered nearly $4 million through insurance, fundraising, and sponsorships to renovate and reopen the space.
The house has 21 rooms for families to stay in, a big community kitchen, and laundry facilities.
The home reopening will help families know they're not alone, says Travis Pearson, President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House.
"Having all the families here going through the same thing builds a great sense of community," said Pearson. "We actually have spaces in it designed so families can be together. They end up cooking meals together, and, at the end of the day, they'll come in and they have like minded people going through the same thing."
Pearson says families can stay here as long as they need to support their children up to 21 years old.
The Sid Katz house will be open to serving families starting Monday, November 5.
