Ruben's Homemade Tamales keeping San Antonio pansas filled for generations

"I told my family in Victoria that I found the best tamales in the world, so I owe them tamales now for Christmas," said Christy Rodriguez.

Tamales will be on the menu this Christmas for many San Antonio families. If you want tamales, however your're going to want to get up early, because many shops will sell out early.

Ruben's Homemade Tamales has been in business for decades, filling pansas with delicious tamales.

"We've been here 72 years. My grandparents started back in 1952," said Norma Casias, granddaughter of the original owners.

This time of year, if you want to try some of their delicious tamales, your going to have to wait in line.

"We make pork tamales for the month of December. Throughout the year we make chicken, jalapeno, pork, and beans," said Casias.

All the tamales are handmade by the lovely ladies at Ruben's Homemade Tamales. The small business opens at 7 a.m., and the demand for the Mexican energy bars is high.

"Yesterday, for example, we sold out at 1:30," said Casias.

The demand is so great, customers even camp out, to make sure they get their tamales.

"I saw the line, so why not stop," said Janice Evans, customer.

Alfred Menchaca said living in San Antonio for 25 years, he has heard about the legendary tamales.

"So I said let me give it a try," said Menchaca.

Christy Rodriguez said after trying Ruben's Homemade Tamales last week, she had to treat her family this Christmas season.

"I told my family in Victoria, that I found the best tamales in the world," said Rodriguez. "So I owe them tamales now, for Christmas."

Alfred Menchaca said it's a holiday tradition.

"Tamales are a must," said Menchaca.

Casias said customers have been coming to Ruben's Homemade Tamales for generations, and she couldn't be prouder.

"We love our customers, and they love us," said Casias.
