SANANTONIO -- A company that sells a popular line of handbags has raised more than a million dollars for cancer research. For one San Antonio women, it s a cause that s personal.
If you ve never seen a Miche Bag, you d be intrigued by the design. By purchasing one, women can buy a stylish purse and help out a good cause at the same time.
Maryann Mays, 68,was diagnosed last November with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Her daughter-in-law, Michele Mays, of San Antonio, worries about her.
She s gone through chemo. She s about to start radiation, Mays said of her husband s mother. She s lost her hair, not her spirit. This then became very personal.
Mays sells a line of purses called Miche Bag. Two year ago, the company launched a campaign called the Hope Program. The sale of each bag raises money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City.
Many of the bags feature inspirational sayings by cancer survivors.
Through the sale of the Hope shells, and we have eight designs, we ve raised over $1.4 million in two years, she said.
Each handbag has magnets. The outside shells are interchangeable.
You literally only take the shell off, instead of changing out the contents of your bag, put another shell on to match what you re wearing, Mays explained.
Miche bags come in four different styles. There are hundreds of designs for the cover changes.
Mays said she hopes to make a difference for her mother-in-law and others by selling support and hope for patients and their families.
I m helping in the fight against cancer, she proclaimed.
The bags are affordable, ranging in price from $50 to $110.
