Flames and heavy black smoke were visible at the Cottage Creek apartments on the 4800 block of Ray Bon Dr. after 5 p.m. as crews sprayed water from above. Officials said that a fire coming from one apartment spread to a common attic area, and destroyed a dozen apartments. They said crews made an aggressive interior attack, but had to go defensive when the attic collapsed.

11 residents were displaced, with one sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation and another treated at the scene for a minor injury. The Red Cross is assisting those people in finding another place to stay. One person is still unaccounted for, but officials said it wasn't clear if that person was home or not. It was still too hot for a secondary search, which will be made more difficult by the collapse of the attic.

Officials said witnesses told responding firefighters that some sort of fight had happened before the fire, and the cause is under investigation.
