SAN ANTONIO — A helping hand is ready to assist those impacted by the flooding in the Houston area. The Salvation Army is sending a team from their facility near downtown San Antonio.
Their crew with the Rapid Response Unit is ready to go for what will likely be a week-long deployment. This vehicle is packed with items to help those impacted by the floods, especially food. Staff and volunteers will be preparing and serving meals to first responders and residents.
"With this vehicle, we can serve up to 500 people at a time," said Amanda Bishop Garcia, emergency services manager.
They are not the only unit to be on the ground in the Houston area. Other Salvation Army emergency disaster units began meal service last Thursday, and have been in hard-hit Walker County, where flooding has been extensive.
Now that water has receded and more areas have become accessible, Houston area officials have requested additional units to help with relief.
"It's Salvation Army from San Antonio and New Braunfels. We are responding together to go and serve the community," said Bishop Garcia.
An incident management team will assign the crew to areas most impacted when they arrive. From there, the Salvation Army will assess the needs in other communities and decided where to send staff and volunteers next.
Bishop Garcia said a response like this is possible through the support of donors.
