SAN ANTONIO — Since 1993, over 220 million shoebox gifts have been collected for children in over 170 countries and territories. This week, San Antonians have an opportunity to change how a child will spend their Christmas through Samaritan Purse's Operation Christmas Child.

Underneath a heap of shoeboxes lays small gifts with a large impact. Sabrina Drewry is a volunteer.

“We hope to collect almost 20,000 shoebox gifts in the San Antonio area,” Drewery said. “Many times, this is the only gift a child has ever received.”

During National Collection Week from November 18 – 25, you can pack your own shoeboxes or do it online for $25 filled with toys and essential items.

“...Really an exciting way to share God’s love with children around the world,” Drewry said.

There are drop-off locations in and around San Antonio, stretching from Lytle to Schertz.

“They receive also the gospel story in their own language and then they’re invited to participate in a 12-lesson discipleship lesson to know Christ,” she said.

Which Drewry says is the best gift of all.

“They share their gifts with their siblings, with their friends, their mom, their dad," she said. "So it’s a gift that isn’t just a blessing to that child but to many in their community as well.”
