SAN ANTONIO — City Council held a special session discussing what's next for District 10 Councilman Marc Whyte following his arrest for suspicion of DWI December 29.
With the vote Sunday morning, the council voted 10-0 to censure the councilman, which means he has been reprimanded but will stay on the council.
"My decision to drive home that evening was wrong," Whyte said.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg suspended Whyte from his committee assignments until further notice, but Whtye says there’s more work to be done across the city.
“I look forward to being back on those committees very, very shortly," Whyte said. "Committees are 100% prerogative of the mayor so if he felt like he needed to temporarily suspend me from the committees I’m not going to cast any judgement on his decision there, it’s what he felt like he needed to do. But I look forward to being on the committee soon."
Following the 10–0 vote to censure councilman Whyte, Mayor Nirenberg spoke about what’s next for the council.
“We just need to get back to business, we just need to move forward," Nirenberg said. "I think the council made an appropriate statement today. I have suspended Councilmember Whyte from his committees, but those committees will continue to work.
Nirenberg said if there’s one positive outcome that comes out this situation, it's that people may pay closer attention to having any number of drinks and getting behind the wheel.
“We’re going to continue to work with law enforcement with community organizations, with neighborhoods to do everything we can to illustrate the dangers of drunk driving,” he said.
Whyte went on to say committees don’t affect the work he’s doing at city hall. He says he’s going to continue “being a loud strong voice for all of the things that we in District 10 care about.”
