SAN ANTONIO — A family mourning the deaths of three loved ones on a San Antonio highway this month is asking for help raising money to bring their remains back to Mexico.
A 46-year-old driver was speeding and driving aggressively Friday on the south side, police officials say, when he rammed into the back of a car carrying 25-year-old Leslie Salas, 22-year-old Yareli Salas and 61-year-old Juan Salas, their father. The family's car was pushed into wrong-way traffic along Roosevelt Avenue before another oncoming vehicle broadsided it.
The three were killed at the scene of the wreck. Authorities later took the suspect into custody after he fled on foot.
"Right now the family is going through a devastating time, losing a husband, a father, two daughters, two sisters," said a GoFundMe launched by the family that's looking to raise at least $27,000.
Family members wrote Juan was taking his daughters to work when the tragedy unfolded. As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, the GoFundMe had raised more than $9,700 in their efforts to bring their relatives' remains back to the Mexican city of Monterrey.
A charge of failure to stop and render aid was filed against the still-unidentified suspect, according to SAPD, which is still investigating the incident. The three-vehicle wreck also left a 56-year-old woman hospitalized, but she's expected to be OK.
