SAFD crews fight large fire at north-side spa storage facility

No injuries were reported. Investigators are looking into what caused the fire.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio crews battled a large fire that erupted at a north-side commercial storage facility Sunday afternoon, sending thick, dark clouds of smoke high into the sky. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded to the scene of the fire at the Spa Crafters warehouse off North Loop 1604 and Redland Road around 2:40 p.m. SAFD said firefighters were able to contain the flames to just the warehouse, where it appeared to be under control as of 4:30 p.m.

A woman who was working across the street thought trash was being burned.

“It went from little smoke to something you’d see in a Marvel cartoon,” said Mijah Daniel, who took out her cell phone and started recording as flames engulfed the warehouse.

Forty-four fire units responded to the fire. Fire officials said residents as far away as New Braunfels and Boerne could see the massive smoke, adding they found extremely heavy flames coming from the storage area at the back of Spa Crafters.

A handful of vehicles burned in the fire, as well as storage containers, and nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Hazmat trucks were sent to the scene as a safety precaution, according to SAFD, to ensure there were no dangerous chemicals stemming from fiberglass and other materials burning in the warehouse.

Investigators said they would look into the cause of the fire once hotspots have been cleared and the damage assessed.

The videos below show how heavy the smoke was as seen from the highway and how close the fire was to nearby homes.
