'A lot of pride' | Visionary behind San Antonio's first Black art gallery thankful to have space to encourage artists

The curator and owner of 'In the Eye of The Beholder' Maria Williams wanted local Black artists to have space for their work and now, her list has grown to over 40.

SAN ANTONIO — 'In the Eye of The Beholder' is San Antonio's first Black art gallery. It recently received recognition from city leaders, including the mayor.

The visionary behind the space is Maria Williams. She is the curator and owner.

"Pride," she said. "A lot of pride and being able to encourage artists and have a space."

Her vision started with an initiative called the the Art of Four, it has now grown to the space near Fort Sam at 1917 North New Braunfels Avenue.

"I think it has allowed San Antonio to also take notice of the Black artists and see their talent," Williams said.

Williams said she wanted local Black artists to have space for their work. She said her list has grown to over 40 not just from here in San Antonio, but across Texas and beyond.

"I wanted them to have a place," she said. "I wanted them to be comfortable walking in with their art and knowing that they can they can display their art without cultural explanation all the time."

There are different types of pieces around the gallery. She said if people haven't been to see the art, she wants them to feel warm and welcomed.

"A sense of pride and belonging that's what I want my community to have, Williams said.

In The Eye of The Beholder Art Gallery is located at 1917 North New Braunfels Ave. in San Antonio.
