San Antonio Police Officer awarded Officer of the Year

San Antonio Police Officer Peter Ovalle will complete 31 years of service in April.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police Officer Peter Ovalle is proudly wearing a new pin on his uniform.

For over 30 years, he has worn the badge. And recently, the San Antonio Police Department recognized him as Officer of the Year.

"It is an accomplishment," he said. "I feel honored."

Ovalle was nominated by his supervisor. He said he was shocked about the award, which was recently given to him by Police Chief William McManus.

"It is not something I was expecting," he said.

He will complete 31 years of service in April, and has primarily served out of SAPD's East Substation.

"There has never been a day of regret," he said.

After serving his country, Ovalle followed his brother's footsteps and became an officer.

"It has been great," he said. "The last ten years have been real good."

Ovalle's work now is about building relationships in the community, like the Boys and Girls Club and Badges for Baseball.

"It is just great to be able to talk to the kids, give them some advice to make the good choices," he said.

The SAFFE officer said the job can be tough, but he said it has been rewarding because he has made such an investment and impact in the community.

As policemen, we have a job to do," Ovalle said. “We still have to treat people the right way."
