SAPD: Suspected dog killer shoots, kills himself as officers conduct search warrant

Police said the 44-year-old male suspect shot himself as officers attempted to conduct a search warrant at the apartment, prompting a SWAT response.

SAN ANTONIO — A suspected dog killer has died after police say he shot himself as San Antonio Police were conducting a search warrant on Aug. 15.

Police Chief William McManus said the officers arrived to the apartment complex on the 8500 block of Wakefield Drive the afternoon of Aug. 15 where they tracked down a man who they believe is the suspect in the shooting of two dogs in separate incidents at a northwest side neighborhood.

As officers approached the man's apartment to conduct a search warrant, McManus said a gunshot rang out from inside the apartment, prompting a SWAT response.

A drone was sent to search the apartment where the 45-year-old male suspect was found to have been injured from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Wednesday, police confirmed the man died from his injuries Tuesday, Aug. 20, and identified him as 44-year-old Jesse Cohn.

Police also said during the course of the investigation into this incident, they discovered Cohn is also the same man in recent incidents seen placing food for dogs in the middle of the street and then trying to run them over.

This is a developing story.
